Gimkit Creative is a sandbox editor where players can make 2D game modes however and share them online via Creative Discovery. Development started in 2021, and Gimkit Creative was officially released on May 10, 2023. The creator, Josh Feinsilber, announced that all official 2D game modes were made using Gimkit Creative. Coding knowledge isn't needed to create maps in Gimkit Creative, but it can be used to make more advanced level designs. Gimkit Creative allows for real-time collaborative creation and enables play for up to 60 players, regardless if whether the host has Gimkit Pro, the Season Ticket, or neither. When creating a map, people have the option to either select a top-down style where players can move in all four directions (like in Fishtopia) or a platformer style where players move left and right and also jump (like in Don't Look Down). Each player can have at 3 maps at once, with the limit being raised to 10 for Gimkit Pro users 25 for Season Ticket holders. Creative uses Memory based level creation where placing objects uses memory, up to a limit of 100,000 memory.

Objects

Main Article: Terrain

Terrain is tiles used to create walls and floors in levels. Terrain is the only type of object that is always locked to a grid. In top-down mode, floors take up 2 Memory per tile while walls take up 3 Memory per tile. In Platformer mode, terrain takes up 3 memory per tile, as all terrain in Platformer mode are Walls. Terrain cannot be modified.

Main Article: Props

Props are objects usually used as decoration. Excluding lasers and barriers, props are the only object type that can be rotated. Props use 10 Memory and have a 5,000 placement limit regardless of size. Props' colors can also be tinted in appearance to slightly change the color of the prop. A full list of props can be found here.

Main Article: Devices

Devices are mechanics that can affect gameplay, whether it be inventory devices which add or take items from your inventory or advanced devices that can affect teams or players. Some devices allow for drag-and-drop style block code for more advanced editing. Some devices have a different Memory cost on their first placement, which is listed if different.

Main Article: Items

Items are objects that the player can add to their inventory. They can be accessed in Gimkit Creative only in-game by using special item Devices like the Item Granter, the Item Spawner, and the Vending Machine, among others. Additionally, Gadgets are special items that the player can use to deal damage to things. The only items that can be used directly, outside of gadgets, are the Med Packs and the Shield Cans. There is also a special terrain variant that can act like an item called Dynamic Terrain, which can be mined and picked up with the Pickaxe.

Gadgets

Special Items

Dynamic Terrain

Main Article: Terrain

Dynamic Terrain is an item that the player can place into the world and break. Dynamic Terrain can be broken by Gadgets but only can be collected with a Pickaxe. Also found in the terrain section.

Med Pack

When used, a med pack will wait for 6.3 second and then heal the user to full health. Moving during this period will cause the med pack to cancel, giving no health.

Shield Can

Similarly to med packs, using a shield can will cause a 3 second wait after which the user will receive 25 shield. Moving during this period will cause the shield can to cancel, giving no shield.

Discovery

Players can share their Gimkit Creative maps with people from around the world to play and enjoy through Creative Discovery. This can be done through map publishing, which allows people to find and play it in Creative Discovery. Published maps will never expire unless taken down or found to be a violation of the Community Guidelines. Publishing a map costs 1,000 GimBucks, but they can be published for free by people who own the Season Ticket. Discovery is disabled from 8am to 4pm on weekdays for all Student Accounts.

Planned Future Features

  • Custom Player Customization
  • Password Device
  • Moving NPCs
